The Supervisory Board of AS Augstsprieguma tīkls (AST) has decided to extend the term of office of Management Board member Gatis Junghāns, recognizing his contribution to the successful synchronisation process and market development, as well as his strategic vision for AST’s future operations. Gatis Junghāns will continue to oversee and develop transmission system operations management, one of AST’s most critical areas of activity for ensuring system resilience and stability.
“Since 9 February this year, Latvia’s transmission system has been operating synchronously with the Continental European electricity system. The Baltic balancing market has been established and continues to develop, integration into European balancing energy platforms has been achieved, and the transition from 60-minute to 15-minute trading intervals has been completed. These are just a few of AST’s achievements in which the work carried out under the system operations management area overseen by Gatis Junghāns played a decisive role. His experience and in-depth knowledge of energy sector matters and system operations management are essential for AST’s further development, enabling the company, together with the rest of the management team, to strengthen and develop a reliable, sustainable, flexible and digitalised energy system of the future,” says Olga Bogdanova, Chair of the AST Supervisory Board.
This year, Gatis Junghāns received a commendation from the Cabinet of Ministers for his contribution to the implementation of Latvia’s energy independence project Synchronisation with Continental Europe. The project, jointly implemented by the Baltic and Polish transmission system operators, also received the prestigious Project Management Institute (PMI) Project of the Year Award, winning first place in the construction and infrastructure projects category.
Gatis Junghāns has been reappointed for a new term of office from 25 April 2026 to 24 April 2031.
As previously reported, continuing the optimisation of corporate governance, the AST Supervisory Board has decided that as of 1 January 2026, the number of AST Management Board members will be reduced from five to four. Following an assessment of efficiency measures, it was concluded that further optimisation of AST’s resources can be achieved in the legal, support and compliance areas by merging several structural units and reallocating responsibilities and duties among the remaining four Management Board members and organisational units. An open competition for the position of Management Board member responsible for development will be organised next year.
From 1 January, AST’s Management Board will continue its work in a four-member composition: Chairman of the Management Board Rolands Irklis and Management Board members Arnis Daugulis, Imants Zviedris and Gatis Junghāns.
